From the British Army to the Jurassic Coast

Max Wray spent 30 years as a British Army officer, leading teams through some of the world's most demanding operational environments across multiple continents. That career built in him a deep understanding of equipment reliability, leadership under pressure, and the kind of personal resilience that only comes from being tested in the field.

Today, Max channels all of that experience into Peak Progression a sea kayak coaching and expedition leadership company based in southern England, with the Jurassic Coast as its training ground. His military background isn't just a talking point; it's the foundation of his coaching philosophy. He believes that great paddling isn't just about technique, it's about confidence, structure, and discovering what you're truly capable of. From beginners finding their balance to experienced paddlers chasing their next expedition, Max builds people up, one paddle stroke at a time.

Extraordinary on the water

Just phenomenal — absolutely my favourite paddle I've ever used. At the risk of sounding a bit corny, it's an absolute joy to use. It's incredibly lightweight and very precise in the water; it cuts incredibly cleanly and is ideal for very long days. They've truly changed my relationship with the water.

Competing at the highest level of Greenland Rolling demands a paddle that is precise, light and utterly reliable. The Ikigai is my trusted companion — it delivers the performance and feel I need to compete for a World Championship title. There is simply no other paddle I'd choose.
