Why Your Paddle Choice Matters More Than You Think

Your paddle is your engine. Unlike your kayak, which sits beneath you, your paddle is in your hands for every single stroke. The right paddle reduces fatigue, protects your shoulders from repetitive strain injury, and makes you a more efficient paddler over long distances. The wrong one can turn a 20 km tour into an ordeal.

Three factors define paddle performance: blade style, shaft material, and length. Get these right and everything else follows.

Blade Style: Greenland, Euroblade, or Wing?

Blade shape is the most fundamental choice you'll make. It determines your stroke technique, cadence, and the kind of paddling you'll enjoy most.

Greenland Paddles

Greenland paddles have long, narrow blades derived from traditional Inuit design. They enter the water quietly, load gradually, and reward a low-angle, relaxed stroke. They excel at rolling, extended touring, and rough-water paddling. Because the blade is narrower, there's less peak force per stroke, which means less shoulder stress over a long day on the water.

Euroblade / Touring Paddles

Euroblade paddles have wider, asymmetric blades that deliver a powerful, high-angle catch. They're the standard choice for most recreational and touring paddlers, offering immediate power and a familiar feel. Wing Paddles

Wing paddles are purpose-built for racing and sprint training. Their curved blade generates lift through the water, increasing efficiency at high cadence. They're not suited to general touring or rolling.

Shaft Material: Fibreglass vs. Carbon

Shaft material affects weight, stiffness, and price, the difference is immediately noticeable on the water.

  • Fibreglass: Heavier than carbon but more affordable. A good entry point for paddlers building their skills. Slightly more flex, which some paddlers find forgiving on the joints.
  • Carbon fibre: Lighter, stiffer, and more responsive. The standard choice for serious touring and expedition paddlers. Reduced swing weight means less fatigue over thousands of strokes. All of our K-PRO paddles feature full carbon construction.

As a rule: if you're paddling more than 7 km at a time or going out regularly, carbon is worth the investment.

 

Feather Angle and Adjustability

Feathering refers to the offset angle between the two blades. A feathered paddle reduces wind resistance on the out-of-water blade, useful in exposed coastal conditions. Most modern paddles offer adjustable feathering (typically 0°, 45°, or 60°). If you're new to sea kayaking, start at 0° or a low angle and experiment from there.

Greenland paddles are traditionally unfeathered, though some paddlers use a slight offset for rough-water work.

Price Tiers: What You Get at Each Level

  • Entry (under €200): Fibreglass or aluminium shaft, plastic or fibreglass blades. Fine for occasional use and learning.
  • Mid-range (€200–€400): Fibreglass blades with carbon or fibreglass shaft. Good balance of performance and value for regular paddlers.
